Day 4, Session I

Does this look familiar? The same one of the three Sams found it who found the first piece.

Both sherds were in rather dubiously mixed company with a great number of graphite battery cores and broken glass, much too close to the surface. I know they are much too high, but it is encouraging.

Slightly deeper, from the same quad, John F. found our first lithic:

a sweet little hornfels thumb scraper. He also picked out a big rhyolite flake. Most of the time, though, the screens are full of bits of slag and clinker and brick.

It was a productive enough day, if only for the refreshment of not sweating at all and at times even being, well, cool. Able to drink hot tea enjoyably. The rain has held off till now, the late evening.

They broke more ground on either side of one of the squares, and found really superb tree roots. Image hosted by Photobucket.com

The northern quads are going slowly. I found myself at a loose end and proposed taking some of the soil cores on the south side of the shed, where we'll be digging tomorrow.
