Two SCRAP Field Schools in 2007
This year SCRAP will offer two field schools. One will be the familiar 6 week (three 2-week sessions) field school run in partnership with PSU. It will be at the Webster Farm starting on June 25. This property was recently saved from subdivision for a housing development and will be protected under easement with the Trust for Public Lands. Richard Boisvert and Edna Feighner will direct the field school which will focus on survey and identifying the full range of sites present on the agricultural portion of the property. Although the property is associated with Daniel Webster, there will be no investigations of the Webster structures.
The other field school will take place in Durham on Little Bay where a month long (two 2-week sessions) project beginning on June 18 will focus on the Field-Bickford Garrison on the edge of Little Bay. This operation will be directed by Craig J. Brown, assisted by Pam Crane and Peter Morrison, CRM professionals from Maine, with coordination with the State Archeologist. They will investigate the Field-Bickford Garrison, an early historic homestead/tavern/ferry that among other things was a target in the 1694 attack on the Oyster River Plantation.
Both projects will emphasize survey and bring to bear mapping with GPS, TDS and application of remote sensing techniques including ground penetrating radar.
