End of Week 1, Session I

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Isn't it idyllic? It really was; the weather was as good as I could ever ask. Warm in the sun, cool in the shade, pleasant dry breeze.

The cost of the tranquillity involved laying out the grid this side of the shed for the FOURTH time, causing Dick to mutter that he will never dig in a city again.
The pit with the nice pottery produced a nice late Archaic projectile pointImage hosted by Photobucket.com, but it also continues to produce modern glass, suggesting that it is significantly disturbed. The pits south of the shed are looking more hopeful; I did a bunch more coring and the layers are simpler-looking. Maybe too simple. Maybe nothing's there. For some reason -- all the advance workshopping? the reports from the sites nearby? -- I am in more suspense and impatience than usual.

At two we closed down and watched a friend of Jen's from Orono demonstrate flint-knapping. He beat a piece of gray chert into a useful biface and explained why he was hitting it in good detail. And we got sharp flakes to take home and use for cutting things (not fingers).

I have enabled the 'comment' function, and it should help a lot,if you want to leave any. I certainly want to read them.

Laura, thanks for enabling the comment section....
It's been amusing to read the daily log and should prepare us for the week we will be in attendance. Must be that 'things' just are not square in the city...
See you soon...
